DALEK EMPIRE: THE FEARLESS
PART THREE
“Wow,” I thought, “what a bold move to start the play with a twist like that!” Then I realized I’d flipped the tracks on my iPod and had started from the end. Whoops! Anyway, after the galaxy-spanning scope of the first two parts, the third episode of The Fearless focuses almost entirely on one ship, a star cruiser containing the so-called Angel of Mercy, Susan Mendes (Sarah Mowat). Kade and his men have been ordered to kill her, but something is clearly amiss. As I mentioned in my review of part 2, the difficulty with this plot is that we know from the first Dalek Empire serial that she survives. Thus, since Kade has tracked her down, there are only two possible outcomes: either he fails to kill her, or he kills someone who later turns out not to be her. Sadly, the script telegraphs that it’s the latter almost from the moment Kade gets aboard the transport, and there’s nothing else going on to rescue the drama from the utter predictability of the ending. Fortunately, there’s a fantastic twist at the conclusion — and I’m wondering if the trap was the fake Angel of Mercy or if the Daleks intended Kade to see through the ruse and hear the recording. The twist is one of those that sounds cool but could easily wind up being silly, but I’ll give Briggs the benefit of the doubt heading into part 4. Predictable but exciting. And someone give Noel Clarke an award.
